Rotary for Life, Saving Lives through Organ Donation

Rotary for Life is a initiative started by the Rotary Clubs of Columbia and Fulton and endorsed by Rotary District 6080 to raise awareness of the importance of organ donation.

Organ transplantation, the procedures used in recovering organs or tissue from one person and placing them into another, is one of the miraculous achievements of modern medicine. As a result multiple organs are now transplanted successfully saving or improving lives. Heart, kidneys, lungs, liver, pancreas and lower portions of small intestines are being safely transplanted. Transplanted tissues include corneas, heart valves, bone, skin, tendons, veins and cartilage.

Bill Killen tells the Rotary Club of Fulton of his journey that led to receiving a heart from a stanger

and a kidney from his daughter, Katie Boland.

Unfortunately, while a small percentage get the chance of renewed life with successful transplants, many die waiting for a suitable organ.

Did you know,

  • Just one donor can save or enhance the lives of more than 50 people.

  • Every day an average of 21 people die before they can receive a donor organ.

  • Each month 500 patients are added to the national waiting list.

  • At any given time, over 100,000 patients are on the waiting list.

90% of Americans say they support organ donation but only 30% say they know how to register as an organ donor! It is a quick and easy process and goes like this:

Missouri has a First-Person Authorization Registry, which changed from an intent registry by legislation that took effect August 28, 2008. This change now allows Missouri citizens of legal age to register as a donor through the DMV when renewing their driver’s license or anytime online. By registering, an individual gives authorization for donation of anatomical gifts (transplantable organs and tissues) at the time of their death. If you registered in Missouri prior to August 28, 2008, it is necessary that you re-register.

Rotarians are validating SERVICE ABOVE SELF by registering donors through our Rotary for Life program. Be a Gift to the World by helping extend and enhance the lives of people on the wait lists.
